Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as SITP) was founded in October 1958. It is a comprehensive research institution that integrates fundamental research, engineering technology development, and high-tech industrialization. SITP is positioned in infrared physics and optoelectronic technology research, with main research directions focusing on new infrared optoelectronic materials, new devices, and new methods. It emphasizes the development of advanced aerospace and aviation payloads, infrared staring imaging and signal processing, infrared focal plane arrays, and remote sensing information processing technologies.
After nearly sixty years of development, SITP has always focused on the major strategic needs of the country. In response to the characteristics of related technical fields, it has gradually formed a complete research and development system with its own characteristics, covering the spectrum from "basic frontier research, core components, to system integration." It has established a relatively systematic innovation technology chain for scientific and technological activities, ranging from fundamental theoretical research on infrared material structures, the development of core components such as infrared detectors, infrared focal plane arrays, visible light detectors, and space cryocoolers, to the technology of infrared and optoelectronic detection systems used in aerospace, aviation, and equipment. The institute has 13 research departments and houses the State Key Laboratory of Infrared Physics, the Joint State Key Laboratory of Sensor Technology (optical sensor specialty point), the Key Laboratory of Infrared Imaging Materials and Devices of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Key Laboratory of Infrared Detection and Imaging Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Key Laboratory of Space Active Optoelectronic Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Infrared Perception of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Joint Laboratory of On-site Physical Evidence Optical Detection Technology jointly established by the province and the ministry.
As of the end of 2018, SITP had a total of 1,152 employees. Among them, there were 730 professional and technical personnel, including 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences (concurrently), more than 80 experts of various types, 165 researchers and senior engineering technical personnel at the level of full professor, and 200 associate researchers and senior engineering technical personnel.
SITP is one of the first units approved by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council to confer doctoral and master's degrees. Currently, it has doctoral training programs in 6 professional disciplines: Physical Electronics, Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics, Circuits and Systems, Optics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering, and master's training programs in 8 professional disciplines: Physical Electronics, Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics, Circuits and Systems, Signal and Information Processing, Optical Engineering, Optics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering. As of the end of 2018, there were a total of 555 graduate students (including 169 master's students, 221 doctoral students, 2 international students, and 163 jointly trained graduate students) and 20 postdoctoral researchers.
In 2018, SITP had a total of 435 ongoing research projects (120 engineering-type projects and 315 basic pre-research projects). SITP serves as the host unit for the Space Remote Sensing Professional Committee of the Chinese Society for Space Science and the Shanghai Infrared and Remote Sensing Society. The institute publishes academic journals such as the Journal of Infrared and Millimeter Waves and Infrared.
