西北矿冶研究院的前身是北京矿冶研究总院西北分院。1972年7月正式成立，1986年1月更名为西北矿冶研究院至今。1999年作为国家经贸委所属的10个国家局管理的242家科研单位之一，整体转制为科技型企业。2000年随有色企事业单位属地化管理方案的实施，划归甘肃省管理，并承担了中国特大型有色企业白银有色集团股份有限公司技术中心的职能。2008年9月由国家发改委、科技部、财政部、海关总署、税务总局五部委联合认定的*企业技术中心。2008年12月由国家科技部、财政部、税务总局联合认定的高新技术企业。
