Wuhan University Press was established in December 1981. It is a comprehensive key university press supervised by the Ministry of Education and one of the three major liberal arts textbook publishing centers of universities nationwide. In early 2001, the former Wuhan University Press, the former Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping Press, and the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering Press merged to form the new Wuhan University Press. In 1995, Wuhan University Press was awarded the honorary title of "Advanced University Press" by the State Education Commission. In 1998, it was jointly awarded the honorary title of "National Excellent Press" by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and the National Press and Publication Administration. Among the four university presses that have won the title of "National Excellent Press," Wuhan University Press is the only one located outside Beijing. Wuhan University Press enjoys multiple publishing rights, including books, maps, audio-visual products, electronic publications, and online publishing. Its publications cover many disciplines such as the humanities and social sciences, natural sciences, and technical sciences. Over the 42 years since its establishment, adhering to the publishing philosophy of "serving higher education and disseminating advanced culture," based on advantageous and distinctive disciplines, relying on authoritative experts and scholars, and developing high-quality publishing resources, it has gradually formed a publishing pattern of "serialized university textbooks, high-quality academic works, and popularized general books." It has published more than 23,500 titles of various books and nearly 3,000 kinds of audio-visual products and electronic publications, winning wide acclaim from all sectors of society. The number of important project titles selected for the National Key Book Publishing Plan, * planned textbooks, and projects funded by the National Publication Foundation ranks among the forefront of university presses nationwide. Nearly 2,000 titles of excellent publications have won awards at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, among which 18 times won the national "Three Major Book Awards." For four consecutive sessions, a total of 7 books were selected for the "Three Hundred" Original Book Publishing Project. In 1988, Wuhan University Press took the lead among university presses nationwide in establishing an academic works publishing fund. In 1991, it took the lead in launching China's * e-book. In 1992, it took the lead in registering as an enterprise legal person. In 2007, it was restructured into a wholly state-owned limited liability company. In 2015, it was recognized as a national "Digital Publishing Transformation Demonstration Unit." In the ranking of "Comprehensive Influence of Chinese Academic Books among Domestic Presses" released by Nanjing University, the comprehensive influence of Chinese academic books published by Wuhan University Press in six disciplines—Marxist theory, philosophy, political science, law, history, and archaeology—entered the top ten; among them, Marxist theory ranked third nationwide. In the "Chinese Book Citation Index for Academic Works" (CBKCI) database released at the end of 2017, 81 excellent academic works including "Three Treatises on the History of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang Dynasties" were included. Wuhan University Press ranked 13th among all publishers nationwide and 3rd among university presses in the number of included books. Since the certification of "Top 100 Publishers with Overseas Library Holdings Influence of Chinese Books" was established, Wuhan University Press has been certified and listed year after year, extending its brand influence overseas.
