South China Agricultural University is a national "Double First-Class" construction university. The campus is located in Guangzhou, a city renowned as the "City of Flowers", covering a total land area of 8,211 mu, including 4,407 mu at the Wushan campus in Tianhe and 3,804 mu at the Zengcheng teaching and research base. The university's total building area is 1.4 million square meters, where natural scenery and cultural landscapes complement each other, forming a beautiful environment of "five lakes, four seas, and a stretch of forest".
The university's history can be traced back to the Guangdong Provincial Agricultural Experiment Station and its affiliated Agricultural Lecture Institute, founded in 1909. In 1952, during the nationwide restructuring of university departments, South China Agricultural College was established by merging the College of Agriculture of Sun Yat-sen University, the College of Agriculture of Lingnan University, and parts of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and Plant Protection Department of Guangxi University, and was placed under the administration of the Ministry of Agriculture. Chairman Mao Zedong personally inscribed the name of the university. In 1979, it was designated as one of the national key universities upon the approval of the State Council. In 1984, it was renamed South China Agricultural University. In 2000, as the country deepened reform of the university management system, the university was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the administration of Guangdong Province. In 2015, the university was included in the construction plan of Guangdong Province's high-level universities. In 2022, it was selected as a national "Double First-Class" construction university.
South China Agricultural University is a comprehensive university with advantages in agricultural sciences and life sciences, and coordinates the development of multiple disciplines including agriculture, engineering, science, literature, history, economics, management, law, art, and philosophy. Botany and animal science, and agricultural science have entered the top 1‰ of ESI global rankings; 13 disciplines, including botany and animal science, chemistry, agricultural science, materials science, environmental science and ecology, microbiology, biology and biochemistry, engineering, molecular biology and genetics, immunology, computer science, pharmacology and toxicology, and general social sciences (sorted by citation count), have entered the top 1% of ESI global rankings. Agronomy and veterinary medicine rank 6th globally in the Shanghai Ranking's Subject Rankings, and food science and engineering ranks 20th globally. Agriculture and forestry rank 41st globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
