The South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was officially established in January 1959. It is a national comprehensive marine research institution. Since its inception, it has consistently upheld the mission orientation of "Based on islands and reefs, deeply cultivating the South China Sea, and crossing the deep blue," committed to realizing national will and fulfilling national missions, supporting the security and sustainable development of the South China Sea, and actively serving the national "South China Sea Strategy," the "Belt and Road" initiative, and the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Strategy."
In terms of disciplinary layout, the institute focuses on key areas such as tropical marine environmental dynamics and ecological processes, marginal sea geological evolution and oil-gas resources, sustainable utilization and ecological conservation of tropical marine biological resources, and marine environmental observation systems and their key technologies. Accordingly, it has established multiple research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Marine Environment and Island Reef Ecology, the Tropical Marine Environment Laboratory, and the Marginal Sea and Ocean Geology Laboratory. Additionally, it operates several field observation stations, such as the Guangdong Daya Bay Marine Ecosystem National Field Observation and Research Station, and large marine scientific research vessels like "Experiment 1," "Experiment 3," and "Experiment 6," providing solid support for comprehensive and multi-level marine research.
