Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Engineering Thermophysics (IET) is a strategic high-tech research institute directly under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It primarily conducts research in the fields of energy, power, and related environmental areas. Its predecessor was the Power Research Laboratory of CAS, founded in 1956 by Professor Wu Zhonghua, the originator of the three-dimensional flow theory, and it was formally established as an institute in 1980. The institute is positioned to address major scientific and technological issues in the field of engineering thermophysics, conducting applied basic research and high-tech research, striving to break through key core technologies in IGCC/co-production, circulating fluidized bed, light-duty power, distributed energy and renewable energy, creating and realizing advanced energy and power systems, and providing innovative ideas, technologies, and talents for the sustainable development of national energy and power. During the CAS "Innovation 2020" program, the institute will focus on breakthroughs in IGCC/co-production systems and key technologies, circulating fluidized bed combustion technology, and advanced light-duty power technology, and will conduct frontier research in five directions: multi-energy complementary distributed energy supply systems, key technologies for new gas turbines, wind energy utilization technology, solar thermal utilization technology, and large-scale compressed air energy storage technology.
