湖南省林业科学院属公益类科研事业单位，地处长沙市韶山南路。成立于1958年，1998年改所为院，2001年湖南省林业工业研究所并入我院，2007年经国家林业局批准成为中国林业科学研究院湖南分院。全院现有在职职工266人，离退休人员152人。现有各类专业技术人员197人，其中研究员28人，副研究员和高级工程师41人。具有本科以上学历160多人，其中博士19人，硕士46人。博士生导师4人，硕士生导师7人。19位科技专家享受国务院政府特殊津贴。全院设置7个管理处室，9个科研所（室），6个开发公司，1个试验林场（近4000亩）。2009年，在岳阳、湘潭设立了两个分院。全院共设9个党支部，党员171人，其中在职党员97人。
