China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), formerly the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was established in 1950. It is the birthplace of nuclear science and technology in China and a comprehensive base for fundamental, forward-looking, pioneering, and engineering nuclear research. In 1958, with the completion of the base and the commissioning of the first heavy water reactor and the first cyclotron, new China entered the atomic energy era. Based on this, the institute made historic contributions to the development of China's "two bombs and one submarine." Among the 23 winners of the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" Meritorious Medal awarded by the state, 7 made their contributions here, and 70 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering have studied or worked here. More than ten important nuclear research and production units in China have been derived from this institute, and over 10,000 key personnel have been trained and sent out from here. Therefore, the institute has earned the reputation as the "cradle" and "mother hen" of China's nuclear industry.
