Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "SARI") is a research institution jointly established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Municipal People's Government, located in the Shanghai Pudong Science and Technology Park of CAS. After three years of preparation, it passed acceptance and was officially inaugurated in November 2012. In March 2017, CAS and the Shanghai Municipal Government signed a supplementary agreement on deepening cooperation to build a science and technology innovation center with global influence, clearly planning to establish a national laboratory based on SARI. On September 26, 2017, CAS and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government held the unveiling ceremony of Zhangjiang Laboratory, and the transfer of the Protein Facility and Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility was successively initiated. The transferred teams included the most complete and comprehensively strongest team for the R&D and engineering construction of large advanced light source facilities in China. Focusing on building Shanghai into a global influential science and technology innovation center and the Zhangjiang Comprehensive National Science Center, SARI actively seeks reform, innovation, and development. Taking the opportunity of preparing for the establishment of the Zhangjiang National Laboratory, SARI promotes its reform and development, further refines research directions, optimizes research layout, establishes new development concepts, directions, and goals, and pragmatically advances various tasks. Currently, SARI focuses on the development, construction, and operation of advanced light source large scientific facilities, conducting original innovative research and core technology R&D in the fields of accelerator science, photon science, energy science, and information science, supporting frontier scientific research, and providing core technologies and integrated technology solutions for strategic emerging industries. Facing the new situation, SARI will closely follow the national innovation-driven development strategy, deeply implement the CAS "Four Firsts" action plan, actively participate in the construction of the Zhangjiang Comprehensive National Science Center, take the construction of the national laboratory as a breakthrough, continuously enhance the level of scientific and technological innovation, align with target requirements, focus on key areas, and give full play to the supporting role of national strategic scientific and technological strength in high-quality economic development.
