The Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences is a national comprehensive research institute for nuclear technology and science. It was established in 1958. The institute conducts basic and applied research in fields such as photon science, accelerator science and technology, nuclear energy technology, nuclear science and technology, and interdisciplinary frontier sciences, targeting the frontiers of world science and technology and national strategic needs. It carries out original and integrated innovation, dedicating to the research and development of thorium-based molten salt reactor nuclear energy systems, the development, operation, and utilization of large scientific facilities such as synchrotron radiation light sources and free-electron lasers, and research at the intersection of nuclear science frontiers and the application of nuclear technology. The goal is to build the institute into a research organization with unique characteristics, irreplaceability, and international competitiveness in China. Currently, SINAP undertakes the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences "Future Advanced Nuclear Fission Energy - Thorium-based Molten Salt Reactor Nuclear Energy System (TMSR)", researching and developing related nuclear energy science and technology to build the entire TMSR industrial chain. The aim is to become a research center for Thorium-based Molten Salt Reactor nuclear energy systems with the most advanced and complete experimental facilities and conditions, targeting industrial applications. SINAP also undertakes projects for the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility beamline and endstation engineering, the X-ray Free-Electron Laser test facility project, the first domestic proton therapy demonstration device development project, as well as multiple 973 projects, major research programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and major projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. SINAP is the host institution for the Shanghai Nuclear Society and the Radiation Research and Radiation Technology Branch of the Chinese Nuclear Society. It publishes academic journals such as Nuclear Science and Techniques (NST) (SCI), Radiation Research and Radiation Technology, and others. It offers 2 doctoral degree programs at the first-level discipline, 5 doctoral degree programs at the second-level discipline, 3 master's degree programs at the first-level discipline, and 14 master's degree programs at the second-level discipline (including 4 professional degrees), and has 2 post-doctoral research stations.
