ExxonMobil in China
ExxonMobil's history in China dates back to 1892, when Standard Oil began selling kerosene in China, and the "Mobil lamp" brought light to many Chinese households.
Since the late 1970s, with China's reform and opening-up, ExxonMobil has gradually re-engaged in various business sectors of China's energy industry. Currently, the company's business in China covers all aspects of the energy industry, including upstream, downstream, and chemicals. ExxonMobil has a long-term commitment to China, dedicated to helping meet China's growing demand for energy and petrochemical products through its products, technology, cooperation with Chinese partners, and investments.
Exploration and Gas Marketing
ExxonMobil began exploration operations in China in the late 1970s.
ExxonMobil seeks high-quality unconventional and conventional resource exploration and development opportunities and actively cooperates with Chinese oil companies overseas.
In 2009, ExxonMobil signed long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) sale and purchase agreements with PetroChina and Sinopec, respectively. Currently, both agreements are being implemented smoothly, supplying 2.25 million tons of LNG annually to PetroChina from the Gorgon project in Australia, and 2 million tons of LNG to Sinopec from the Papua New Guinea project. Four LNG carriers newly built for these two projects by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding have all been delivered on schedule.
Fujian Joint Venture
In 2007, ExxonMobil, together with its partners - Saudi Aramco, Sinopec, and Fujian Province - formed a fully integrated Sino-foreign joint venture covering refining, chemicals, and finished product marketing.
The finished product marketing joint venture invested by Sinopec, ExxonMobil, and Saudi Aramco sells diesel and gasoline supplied by the production joint venture through several oil depots and approximately 1,000 service stations in Fujian Province.
Lubricant Production, Sales, and Service
ExxonMobil sells Mobil-branded automotive, commercial, and industrial lubricant products in China, with two technologically advanced lubricant plants in Taicang, Jiangsu, and Tianjin. Expansion projects at the Tianjin and Jiangsu Taicang lubricant plants were completed in 2014 and 2016, respectively, significantly increasing production capacity.
The Asia Pacific Lubricants Technology Center, established at ExxonMobil's Shanghai R&D Center in 2015, provides comprehensive innovative lubrication solutions to customers in the Asia Pacific region, including China.
More than 1,000 Mobil 1 car care stores across the country serve China's rapidly growing driving population.
Through Mobil wind energy services launched in China, ExxonMobil provides safe, environmentally friendly, and efficient wind turbine oil change solutions for wind power companies.
Chemicals
ExxonMobil sells a variety of chemical products in China, meeting customer needs in packaging, automotive, industrial, consumer goods, and hygiene and personal care applications.
In addition to participating in the investment in the Fujian refining and petrochemical integrated complex, ExxonMobil produces specialty chemical products at its wholly-owned facility in Guangdong Province and its joint venture in Jinshan, Shanghai.
In March 2011, ExxonMobil Chemical Company's third largest global R&D center officially began operations in Shanghai. The Shanghai R&D Center is equipped with advanced laboratories and processing equipment to provide product application support and innovative solutions to customers in China and across Asia. In April 2018, the expansion of the Shanghai R&D Center, with an investment of tens of millions of dollars, was completed and put into use. The expansion includes new state-of-the-art R&D facilities to support deepened cooperation with customers and drive business growth.
Currently, ExxonMobil is looking for opportunities to establish large-scale chemical projects in the Asia Pacific region, including China. On November 1, 2017, ExxonMobil signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement and a memorandum of understanding with the Huizhou Municipal Government and the Huizhou Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone Management Committee. On September 5, 2018, ExxonMobil signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Guangdong Province and signed a preliminary investment agreement for the Daya Bay project with Huizhou City and the Daya Bay Management Committee. Currently, all parties are actively advancing the project.
