BASF's ties with the Greater China market date back to 1885, and since then BASF has been a loyal partner to China. As a major foreign-invested enterprise in China's chemical industry, BASF's main production sites are located in Shanghai, Nanjing, Chongqing, and Zhanjiang (under construction). The Shanghai Innovation Campus serves as BASF's R&D hub in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2024, BASF's sales to customers in Greater China amounted to approximately EUR 8.6 billion, with a workforce of 12,687 employees at the end of the year.

Currently, BASF operates 27 major wholly-owned subsidiaries, 11 major joint ventures, and 28 sales offices in Greater China. Its business in the region includes petrochemicals, intermediates, performance materials, monomers, dispersions and resins, performance chemicals, care chemicals, nutrition and health, coatings, environmental catalyst and metal solutions, battery materials, and agricultural solutions.

The aforementioned chemical products are used in virtually every aspect of daily life, from housing, automobiles, food, crops, medicine, textiles, household items, electronic devices, to packaging, and more. As of the end of 2024, BASF has cumulatively invested over EUR 13 billion in Greater China (approximately EUR 17 billion when including joint investments with partners), establishing a competitive network for local production, marketing, sales, technical service, and innovation.
