Our Story How we started

Airwallex's founding was inspired by hands-on experience in business operations and professional insight into the flow of money.
Because of their love for coffee, Jack Zhang and Max Li opened a coffee shop named Tukk & Co in Melbourne. When importing coffee beans, they experienced the high costs of foreign exchange fees and bank payment charges—a common dilemma for many small businesses. They then teamed up with two other University of Melbourne alumni, Lucy Liu and Xijing Dai, to develop a series of products aiming to build a more streamlined, transparent, and cost-effective cross-border payment solution to improve the cross-border payment experience for businesses.

From 2020 to 2021, Airwallex was named to the Forbes Cloud 100 list for two consecutive years. In 2020, it won the 'Outstanding Startup Award' at the DHL/South China Morning Post Hong Kong Business Awards, and officially became a member unit of the China Payment and Clearing Association and the Internet Finance Association. From 2018 to 2020, it was continuously ranked in the KPMG Fintech100 list as one of the top 50.
