Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (abbreviated as Tsinghua SIGS) is a public graduate education institution co-founded by Tsinghua University and the Shenzhen Municipal Government against the backdrop of the nation's efforts to deepen higher education reform and advance the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School is committed to building itself into a * graduate school, becoming a first-class talent cultivation base that serves society and leads development; conducting research on major global challenge issues, and becoming an international innovation research center for interdisciplinary integration; exploring a modern university governance system, and becoming a model of school-enterprise-government cooperation and an internationalized campus; and supporting the transformation of the university's engineering disciplines and the development of related disciplines. Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School was established on the basis of expanding the Tsinghua Shenzhen Graduate School and the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute. Founded in 2001, the Tsinghua Shenzhen Graduate School made many positive contributions in exploring higher education reform and serving local economic and social development; the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute established in 2014 explored valuable experience in high-level in-depth international cooperative education, laying a solid foundation for the creation and development of the International Graduate School. In the new historical period, the nation has deployed efforts to advance the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and promote the formation of a new pattern of comprehensive opening-up. The Greater Bay Area should "build a highland for education and talent," "build an international education demonstration zone, introduce world-renowned universities and distinctive colleges, and advance the construction of * universities and first-class disciplines." Shenzhen has established the development goals of building an innovation-led global city, an international science and technology innovation center of the Greater Bay Area, and a global highland and source of emerging technology and industrial innovation and development, and accelerating the development of strategic emerging industries. To serve national needs and boost regional development, on November 4, 2016, Tsinghua University and the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government signed an agreement to jointly build Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School. On November 6, 2018, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School and entrusted it with the mission of making full use of Shenzhen's geographical advantages and science and technology innovation concepts to continuously improve the quality of talent cultivation and the level of scientific research, and to make greater contributions to deepening higher education reform and serving national and regional economic and social development. On December 1, 2018, the municipal government and the university signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation framework agreement, opening a new chapter. On March 29, 2019, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School was officially unveiled. In accordance with Tsinghua University's development strategy and Shenzhen's industrial needs, the International Graduate School prioritizes the layout of Tsinghua University's first-class engineering disciplines supplemented by innovation management, forming "6+1" thematic areas, including: Energy and Materials, Information Technology, Medicine and Health, Ocean Engineering, Future Human Habitats, Environmental Ecology, and Innovation Management. These advantageous disciplines are highly aligned with Shenzhen's industrial development needs and will provide impetus for Shenzhen's industrial transformation, contribute to the social innovation and development of the Greater Bay Area, and strongly support the development of related disciplines at the university, boosting Tsinghua University's construction of a "Double First-Class" university. High-quality faculty and students are important factors in building a first-class university. The International Graduate School will recruit outstanding full-time teachers globally and attract outstanding students from around the world through high-quality training programs. In terms of faculty development, based on fully drawing on the academic standards and work procedures for faculty recruitment of the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, a faculty appointment system for the International Graduate School will be formed. By 2025, it is expected to build a high-level, internationalized faculty team of about 250 people, with overseas teachers accounting for one-third. In accordance with the overall requirements of the university's graduate education, the International Graduate School will improve a complete system for admission, training, and degree work, and perfect a strict and standardized training system and quality assurance system, while fully reflecting the training characteristics of the Shenzhen campus. It will adhere to the "two wings flying together" of academic doctoral education and professional degree education—doctoral education will focus more on source innovation and * technological innovation, providing sustained impetus for scientific and technological innovation and industrial transformation and development; professional degree education will, through repositioning training objectives and reshaping the training process, cooperate deeply with industry, emphasize the combination of engineering technology and innovation management, and cultivate high-level composite professionals needed by industry on a large scale and in an organized manner. In terms of talent cultivation, it will focus on full-time graduate education, supplemented by part-time education. By 2025, full-time enrolled students are expected to reach 5,000, of whom about 10% will be overseas students. At present, Tsinghua University has carried out multi-level cooperation with a number of world-renowned universities and institutions, including the University of California, Berkeley in the United States, Imperial College London in the United Kingdom, RWTH Aachen University in Germany, Kyoto University in Japan, the French National Centre for Scientific Research, Waseda University in Japan, Nagoya University, Paris Descartes University in France, Paris Diderot University in France, and the University of Melbourne in Australia, relying on the International Graduate School to carry out work. The International Graduate School regularly organizes students to visit more than 30 universities and research institutes in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan to carry out overseas academic exchange activities, and accepts reciprocal visits from teachers and students of the other schools. The International Graduate School is located in the central part of the Xili Lake International Science and Education City, a highland of science and education innovation in the Greater Bay Area. The campus covers an area of about 50 hectares and consists of the West Campus of University Town (formerly the campus of Tsinghua Shenzhen Graduate School, already completed), the Xili Lake Campus (formerly the Xili Lake Resort and surrounding areas, under planning and construction), and the East Campus of University Town (east of the University Town Stadium, under planning and construction), forming an overall spatial layout of "one school, three campuses," and sharing the public supporting facilities and ecological green spaces of Shenzhen University Town. The campus has a good natural ecological environment, adjacent to the regional ecological core Xili Lake, with the Dasha River winding through the campus like a jade belt, and the urban greenway mainly for slow traffic connects the campuses to each other.
