As one of Cummins' long-term strategies in the Chinese market, Cummins East Asia Research & Development Co., Ltd. is a joint venture jointly invested and established by Cummins Inc. and Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., and is also the *** technology R&D center established in China by a foreign-funded diesel engine enterprise. The company is located in the Wuhan Economic Development Zone and mainly provides research, development, and experimental development of diesel and compressed natural gas engines, power generation equipment, and filtration/exhaust components (including intermediate testing for R&D activities), as well as engineering technical services and support ("technical services"). Technical services include: adaptation development, product development, source qualification, supplier development, emissions testing, certification services, customer application engineering design, and the development of *** solutions for the Chinese market. The successful laying of the foundation stone of Cummins East Asia Research & Development Co., Ltd., established through cooperation between Cummins and Dongfeng Motor Corporation, marks a major elevation of the Chinese market's strategic position in Cummins' global R&D strategy and will promote technological progress in China's engine industry and the cultivation of key R&D talent. Based on the R&D policy of being rooted in China and oriented toward the world, the company will make full use of the huge capacity of the Chinese market to develop a new-generation engine platform that can not only meet domestic market demand but also have first-class international competitiveness.
As of December 31, 2010, Cummins East Asia Research & Development Co., Ltd. had a plant building area of 11,066 square meters, with a total investment of RMB 176 million. It had built 10 world-class advanced engine test benches, including full-flow emissions testing capability, as well as a large number of advanced testing and development platforms including a vehicle pilot center, electronic control laboratory, applied mechanics and materials laboratory, and filtration laboratory.
Starting in December 2010, with investment from Cummins, Cummins East Asia Research & Development Co., Ltd. launched a new round of scale and capability expansion. The total investment amounted to US$32.5 million, expanding the plant building area to 17,566 square meters and adding 10 *-level engine test benches, including 4 hybrid engine test benches, a cold start laboratory, and a noise and vibration laboratory. It has a technical team of more than 170 R&D and professional technical support personnel, conducting research and development of engine products and technologies in sync with European and American markets. After this expansion is completed, East Asia R&D will become Cummins' second-largest R&D institution globally, after the U.S. headquarters technical center.
Cummins East Asia Research & Development Co., Ltd. will also cooperate fully with relevant departments to provide technical support for the formulation and implementation of emissions regulations.
