华能威海电厂地处威海市经济技术开发区，滨临黄海，与甲午海战遗址刘公岛隔海相望，距市中心约16公里，距威海市火车站约5公里，与威海新港毗邻。
该厂创建于1991年4月。1992年6月，一期工程2×12.5 万千瓦机组开工，主设备由上海汽轮机厂、上海电机厂、上海锅炉厂制造，分别于1993年11月和1994年7月投产发电；二期工程2台30万千瓦机组1996年3月开工，主设备由上海汽轮机厂、上海电机厂、东方锅炉厂制造，1998年3月和11月相继投产发电。目前，该厂的装机容量为85万千瓦，其中，华能国际电力股份有限公司持股60％，威海市持股40％。
