[Summary] China Merchants Bank, because of you, we change
China Merchants Bank (hereinafter referred to as "CMB") was established in 1987 in the forefront of China's reform and opening-up - Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. It is the first joint-stock commercial bank in China fully held by corporate legal persons, and also the first pilot bank promoted by the state to push banking reform from outside the system.
Over the past 25 years since its establishment, accompanied by China's rapid economic growth and the support of numerous customers and all sectors of society, CMB has developed from a small bank with only 100 million yuan in capital, one business outlet, and over 30 employees into a nationwide joint-stock commercial bank with net capital exceeding 200 billion yuan, total assets exceeding 2.8 trillion yuan, over 900 outlets, and nearly 50,000 employees, ranking among the world's top 100 banks.
With sustained financial innovation, high-quality customer service, a steady operating style, and sound business performance, CMB has now developed into one of the most brand-influential commercial banks in China. In the comprehensive rating of commercial banks by the China Banking Regulatory Commission, CMB has consistently ranked first for many years. Meanwhile, it has won multiple honors from authoritative media such as the Financial Times, The Banker, Euromoney, The Asset, and Asian Banker, including "Best Commercial Bank", "Best Retail Bank", "Best Private Bank in China", and "Best Custodian Bank in China". In the global bank price-to-book ratio ranking released by the Financial Times, among the 50 largest banks by market value globally, CMB ranked first in price-to-book ratio. In the 2011 "Top 1000 World Banks" ranking published by The Banker magazine, CMB ranked 60th.
Currently, CMB has 87 branches and 801 sub-branches in more than 100 cities in mainland China, 2 branch-level specialized institutions (Credit Card Center and Small Enterprise Credit Center), 1 representative office, 2,031 self-service banks, and 1 wholly-owned subsidiary - CMB Financial Leasing Co., Ltd. In Hong Kong, it has subsidiaries such as Wing Lung Bank Limited and CMB International Capital Corporation Limited, as well as one branch (Hong Kong Branch). In the United States, it has a New York branch and a representative office. It also has representative offices in London and Taipei. From January to March 2012, the company achieved a net profit of 11.121 billion yuan, an increase of 31.59% compared to the same period last year.
Taking "service, innovation, and stability" as its core values, CMB adheres to the coordinated development of efficiency, quality, scale, and structure, and has gradually stood out among domestic peers. In corporate governance, it separated ownership and management rights from the outset, establishing an early modern corporate governance structure with clear division and mutual checks among the Board of Directors, the Supervisory Committee, and the management. In personnel management, it took the lead in breaking the "three irons" system (iron rice bowl, iron chair, iron salary) that commonly existed in domestic enterprises at that time, implementing a "six abilities" mechanism: personnel can enter and exit, cadres can be promoted and demoted, and remuneration can be increased and decreased. In informatization, it led peers in building a unified IT platform across the whole bank, establishing the first telephone banking in China, and early achieving interbank deposit and withdrawal and zero-in-transit fund transfer. In product development, many of CMB's innovative business products have obvious competitive advantages. "All-in-One Card" (Yi Ka Tong) is the first bank debit card in China based on customer number management, with cumulative issuance exceeding 60.85 million cards, and average deposit per card exceeding 10,000 yuan, far above the national average, and is known as one of the customers' favorite bank cards. "One Net" (Yi Wang Tong) is the first online banking in China, where continuous improvements in e-banking channels such as online and telephone banking have effectively eased the pressure on physical branches. In 2011, the substitution rate for retail e-channels reached 86.57%, and for corporate e-channels, the figure was 49.63%. As of the end of 2011, downloads of the iPhone and Android mobile banking clients surpassed 2.5 million, and total signed mobile banking customers reached 4.4947 million, forming three major mobile banking platforms (iPhone, Android, and web versions) that fully cover mid-to-high-end smartphone users. Its credit card is China's first dual-currency credit card conforming to international standards, with total card issuance exceeding 39.61 million, and has been compiled into an MBA teaching case by Harvard University. "Golden Sunflower" (Jin Kuihua) wealth management is the first wealth management product for high-end customers in China, enjoying high reputation among them, with the number of customers at Golden Sunflower level and above reaching 783,200. Private banking services were first introduced among joint-stock banks in China and have been rated "China's Best Private Bank" multiple times by authoritative domestic and international media. Cross-bank cash management pioneered in the domestic banking industry and has become the first choice for capital management of large enterprise groups. In addition, CMB holds a leading position among joint-stock banks in personal savings deposits, personal consumer loans, asset custody, enterprise annuities, offshore finance, and other businesses. CMB's risk management has always been praised by the industry, maintaining a consistently good asset quality. As of March 2012, the non-performing loan ratio was 0.58%, and the provision coverage ratio for NPLs was 409.70%.
