Science Press was established in August 1954 through the merger of the Compilation and Translation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Longmen United Bookstore, which was founded in 1930. In April 2007, it was restructured into Science Press Co., Ltd. In 2011, it completed a shareholding system reform and was wholly converted into China Science Publishing & Media Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as the "Company"). On January 18, 2017, the Company was listed on the main board of the Shanghai Stock Exchange (stock abbreviation: China Science Publishing, stock code: 601858), becoming the first listed stock among central publishing groups.
For over 60 years, Science Press, relying on the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has adhered to the fine traditions and work style of "high level, high quality, and high standard" and "serious, rigorous, and strict," persisting in serving scientific and technological innovation, scientific communication, and the vast number of authors and readers. It faces the world's scientific frontiers, major national needs, and the main battlefield of the national economy, fully tapping into excellent publishing resources at home and abroad, and attaching importance to the construction of major publishing projects. It has formed a business architecture with science (S), technology (T), medicine (M), education (E), and humanities and social sciences (H) as the main publishing fields. Currently, Science Press publishes more than 4,000 new books and over 300 journals each year, and has 23 subordinate branches and subsidiaries, including Science China Press Co., Ltd., Beijing Longteng Bafang Culture Co., Ltd., and Beijing Zhongke Import & Export Co., Ltd. It has also established branches in Chengdu, Wuhan, Nanjing, Xi'an, Shijiazhuang, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Suzhou, as well as in the United States, Japan, and France, forming a comprehensive global publishing and distribution network. It is the largest comprehensive scientific and technological publishing institution in China.
The Company consistently upholds the publishing philosophy of "specialization, refinement, and serialization," placing great emphasis on major and key publishing projects. It has been selected for 42 projects of the National Publication Fund; selected for more than half of the total projects of the National Fund for Academic Publication in Science and Technology; selected for 90 key projects of the "12th Five-Year Plan" national key book publishing plan and 70 projects of the "13th Five-Year Plan" national key book publishing plan; and selected for 15 projects of the "Three Hundred" original publishing project. The number of projects selected for various publishing funds and national planning projects ranks among the top in the national publishing houses.
The Company also boasts a high-level, high-quality, and diverse journal portfolio. In 2019, the Company published 347 journals annually, including 131 English-language journals, of which 53 were included in SCI (Science Citation Index) and 50 in EI (Engineering Index), with 14 ranking in the Q1 zone of international journals in the same field. Among them, the 17 Chinese and English journals of the "Science in China" and "Science Bulletin" series (collectively referred to as the "Two Journals") are high-level academic journals operated and managed on the platform of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. They are well-known brands among China's natural science journals and have won the first, second, and third National Journal Awards, and the second, third, and fourth China Publishing Government Award for Journals. The high-end review academic journal "National Science Review" has a latest impact factor (2022) of 17.275, ranking third among multidisciplinary comprehensive journals globally.
The Company actively responds to the central government's strategy of "going global" in culture. It has established long-term and good cooperative relationships with more than 200 publishing companies in over 20 countries and regions. On the basis of establishing wholly-owned subsidiaries in the United States and Japan, it completed the acquisition of 100% equity of France's EDP Sciences in 2019, perfecting its global business layout. In recent years, the annual export of book copyrights has ranked first among scientific and technological publishing houses. The Company has successively won titles such as "Advanced Unit for National Copyright Export," "2008 China's Most Influential Copyright Enterprise," and "2015 National Copyright Demonstration Unit." Moreover, it has been jointly rated as a "National Key Cultural Export Enterprise" by the Ministry of Commerce, the Publicity Department, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Culture, and the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television for many consecutive years.
In the wave of digital transformation in the publishing industry, the Company has boldly innovated, clarifying the strategic path of transforming from traditional publishing to knowledge services, and establishing directions for business innovation and transformation in professional subject knowledge repositories, healthcare big data, and digital education cloud services. It has successively launched knowledge service products such as "Science Repository," "CourseGate Education Cloud Platform," "SCIPMED Chinese Medical Resource Repository," and "SciEngine China Science and Technology Journal International Dissemination Platform." Among them, the "SciEngine Platform" was selected for the "Top 30 Innovations in the Integration of National Newspapers and Periodicals and Media," and the "Science Repository" won the "Second China Publishing Government Award for Audio, Video, Electronic and Network Works." In 2015, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of China also awarded the Company the title of "Pilot Unit for Knowledge Service Model of Professional Digital Content Resources."
