In September 2015, during President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States, Tsinghua University, Sichuan Province, Washington University, and Washington State signed the "Climate-Smart/Low-Carbon City" 2+2 cooperation agreement. To implement the agreement, Tsinghua University, with strong support from Sichuan Province, Chengdu City, and Tianfu New Area, established the Tsinghua Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as the Institute), which officially settled in Tianfu New Area in March 2016, committed to building a talent aggregation platform, technological innovation center, and industrial development highland in the field of energy internet. Focusing on major research directions such as energy-environment-economy coordination, key equipment for energy internet, smart energy systems, and energy internet security, the Institute has introduced 32 high-level research teams, gathering over 300 high-level talents from home and abroad, including 3 national-level talents, 17 Sichuan provincial-level talents, 10 Chengdu Rongpiao talents, and 1 top innovation and entrepreneurship team in Chengdu; scientific research personnel account for 81% of the total staff, and those with associate senior titles or above or mastering core technologies account for 37% of the scientific research personnel. As of February 2021, the Institute has developed more than 20 key core technologies and over 50 innovative products, undertaken 8 National Key R&D Program projects and 5 National Natural Science Foundation projects, applied for 409 patents, received 8 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, and cultivated 13 innovative enterprises, including 5 high-tech enterprises and 1 quasi-unicorn enterprise; it has initiated the Energy Internet International Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit, hosted a series of major events such as the China-US "2+2" Clean Energy Forum, the 2018 ACDC International Academic Conference, and the Global Finals of the 5th Tsinghua Alumni Sanchuang Competition (Human Settlements Environment category); and established cooperative relationships with 40 universities and research institutions, 111 industrial enterprises, and 13 international organizations worldwide.
