为落实2016年签署的省校战略合作协议，2017年7月，上海交通大学四川研究院揭牌成立。2018年12月，研究院开始启动全面建设。研究院是上海交通大学在川全部科研教育资源的总体管理单位。
研究院按照“一二三四五”发展路径，以“创新平台（研究院）+研究生培养基地+科技园+成果转化基金+国际交流”五位一体的发展模式，建设国内、国际先进的科技成果转移转化平台。研究院先后获批国家自然科学基金申报依托单位、四川省新型研发机构、四川省众创空间、四川省博士后创新实践基地、四川省引才引智基地、四川省知识产权市场化运营示范基地、成都市孵化苗圃、成都市引智示范单位、成都市军民融合单位。
研究院总部落地在天府海创园，载体面积3.3万平米，作为交大在川全部科研教育资源的总体管理单位，研究院负责统筹推进学校在川科技创新、成果转化、人才培养等工作，具备成果转化、科研集聚、人才培育、资本服务和论坛交流五大功能。
