厦门市特种设备检验检测院由原厦门市锅炉压力容器检验所和厦门市特种设备检测检验所合并而成，隶属厦门市质量技术监督局，是专业从事特种设备监督检验和定期检验的公益型财政补差事业单位，也是完全独立的具有法定性质的第三方公正性综合检验机构。我院主要负责特种设备的定期检验和监督、验收检验，组织与特种设备有关的节能、环保措施的研究与测试等工作。
