Corrosion Innovation Institute

Guangdong Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology Innovation (hereinafter referred to as the "Corrosion Innovation Institute") is a new-type research and development institution jointly organized by the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Engineering Research Center for Metal Corrosion Control, and the Administrative Committee of Guangzhou High-tech Industrial Development Zone. On March 9, 2020, it was officially registered as a provincial public institution in Guangdong Province. In October 2020, it was officially approved as a high-level innovation research institute in Guangdong Province. At present, it is a new-type R&D institution in Guangdong Province, and has successively become the lead unit of national key R&D program projects, a supporting unit of the National Natural Science Foundation, and a supporting unit of the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation. It has officially established and constructed the National Engineering Research Center for Metal Corrosion Control (Guangdong) and the CAS Laboratory for Corrosion Control Engineering (Guangdong), two national and provincial-level platforms. Based on the disciplinary advantages, research achievements, and talent teams in fields such as metal corrosion protection and new materials of the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Engineering Research Center for Metal Corrosion Control, the Corrosion Innovation Institute actively attracts talents from across the country and even the world, and combines the industrial layout, talent advantages, and policy support of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, striving to build itself into a new-type R&D institution integrating basic research, technology development, system integration, engineering application, industrialization incubation, and public technical services as a full-chain work. The strategic goal of the Corrosion Innovation Institute is to become, within about 10 years, an innovation platform where industry, academia, research, application, and capital collaborate synergistically and create together, a core base for corrosion protection technology innovation, R&D, and the transfer and transformation of achievements in China, and a world-leading corrosion control center with "international first-class basic research, advanced technology, and industry-aligned research achievements." The Corrosion Innovation Institute adheres to a global perspective in absorbing and gathering talents, and focuses on the cultivation and introduction of high-level talents. It plans to build a high-level team of 300 people over 5 years. As of the end of December 2022, the institute has 201 registered staff, of which 68% have a master's degree or above, 25% have senior professional titles, and 41% of the R&D team hold a doctorate. It has introduced 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 innovation team of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, 1 National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 1 WR** talent, 1 candidate for the New Century Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Project, and 3 research teams of the Hundred Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has also recruited 2 senior managers on a full-time basis. The Corrosion Innovation Institute has established seven technical and support departments: the Department of Basic Research and International Exchange, the Department of Corrosion Evaluation in Natural and Extreme Industrial Environments, the Department of Materials Preparation, the Department of Typical Product Development, the Department of Engineering Demonstration of Corrosion Control Technology, the Standards Research Center, and the Testing Center, and conducts research in seven key directions: corrosion-resistant materials, surface modification technology, anti-corrosion coatings and surface coatings, corrosion inhibitors, cathodic protection, monitoring and detection technology, and safety evaluation, life prediction, and failure analysis of engineering structures.
