Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Unmanned Systems (Nansha) (hereinafter referred to as the "Institute") was established in July 2019. It is a public institution co-founded by the Shenyang Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government, and the Management Committee of Guangzhou Nansha Development Zone. Recognized by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology as a new-type R&D institution and a high-level provincial research institute, it serves as the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Underwater Robot Detection and Operation Systems, the Guangdong Provincial Doctoral Workstation, the Guangdong Provincial Sea Intelligence Program Workstation, the Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Underwater Robot Intelligent Technology and Unmanned Systems, the Guangzhou Academician and Expert Workstation, and the Guangzhou Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base. Addressing national strategic needs and relying on the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute, together with the Shenyang Institute of Automation, has formed a pattern of "north-south interaction and incremental development." Its missions are twofold: first, to conduct research on large-scale intelligent unmanned marine equipment for deep and distant seas, leading the leapfrog development of China's unmanned underwater vehicles, advancing marine technology and equipment, and enhancing capabilities in marine security, resource exploration, and scientific research; second, to address the development needs of emerging marine industries by developing new underwater intelligent unmanned equipment, thereby improving the intelligence level of offshore wind power, marine ranching, and marine resource exploration and extraction, and promoting the clustering and high-quality development of the marine high-end equipment industry. Located in Nansha District, Guangzhou (a new area and the new core district of Guangzhou), the Institute boasts infrastructure including the Mingzhu Science Park research base, the Longxue Island assembly and testing base, the Longxue Island dock, and a comprehensive research vessel. In terms of talent, it has recruited strategic scientists in the marine equipment field, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Furthermore, the Institute actively promotes industry-university-research collaboration by cooperating with multiple universities to jointly train graduate students and establish internship and practice bases. To date, it has established joint graduate training bases with the Foshan Graduate School of Northeastern University, Guangzhou University, and Shenyang University of Technology, and has successively carried out joint graduate training with Sun Yat-sen University and other universities.
