The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "IHEP") is a comprehensive research base in China dedicated to high energy physics research, advanced accelerator physics and technology research and development, and advanced X-ray technology and application research. Since its establishment in 1973, IHEP has won more than 200 scientific research awards, including 2 first prizes of the National Natural Science Award, more than 20 second prizes and above for the National Natural Science Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC) project and the Lunar Exploration Project (as a member unit) were awarded the Special Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. On July 17, 2013, President Xi Jinping visited IHEP. IHEP currently has over 1,400 employees, including more than 1,200 professional technical personnel, among whom there are 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and nearly 100 leading talents such as recipients of the Ministry of Science and Technology's Young and Middle-Aged Science and Technology Innovation Talent Award, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and high-level research backbones. Academician Xie Jialin received the 2011 National Highest Science and Technology Award. Academician Wang Yifang received the American Physical Society's "Panofsky Prize in Experimental Particle Physics" and led the Daya Bay experiment team to win the 2016 "Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics". IHEP conducts basic and applied research based on large-scale scientific facilities. The currently operating large-scale facilities include the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, the Beijing Spectrometer, the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the Yangbajing International Cosmic Ray Observatory in Tibet, and the Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment. In 2017, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope satellite "Insight" (HXMT) was successfully launched, and the China Spallation Neutron Source, constructed by IHEP, passed national acceptance in August of the same year. Large-scale facilities under construction include the ADS High-Intensity Proton Accelerator, the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory, the High Energy Photon Source, and the Ali Gravitational Wave Experiment. Facilities under pre-research and planning include the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) space observatory (which has entered the second phase of background models) and the Circular Electron Positron Collider. IHEP also participates in collaborative research on several large experiments in the United States, Europe, Japan, and other countries. IHEP enhances its capability building through multiple laboratories. It currently houses the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider National Laboratory, the State Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics (jointly built with the University of Science and Technology of China), the CAS Key Laboratory of Particle Astrophysics, the CAS Key Laboratory of Nanobiological Effects and Safety (jointly built with the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology), the CAS Key Laboratory of Particle Acceleration Physics and Technology, and the Beijing Engineering Center for Radiographic Imaging Technology and Equipment. The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), located in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, passed the process appraisal and acceptance organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences on March 25, 2018, completing the construction task. It became China's first and the world's fourth pulsed spallation neutron source, filling the gap in the field of pulsed neutron applications in China and providing a powerful scientific research platform for neutron science research and applied research in China. Looking ahead, IHEP will always adhere to facing the world's scientific frontiers and national strategic needs, closely focus on the institute's strategic positioning, strive to enhance independent innovation capabilities, and continuously advance towards the goal of becoming an "internationally first-class high energy physics research center and a large comprehensive multidisciplinary research base".
