CCCC Water Transport Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd. (formerly the Water Transport Planning and Design Institute of the Ministry of Communications), established in 1951, is the first water transport survey, planning, and design institution in New China. As a wholly state-owned enterprise, it is affiliated with China Communications Construction Company, and is commonly known as the "Water Planning Institute" in the social brand. Currently, it has five major industry brands: CCCC Water Transport Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd., CCCC Construction Research Institute, CCCC Ocean Institute, and CCCC Inland Waterway Institute.
The Water Planning Institute has established nine major business sectors, including high-end consulting, technology development, water transport design, engineering business, information business, urban business, ecological and environmental protection, overseas business, and investment business. Its operations span across China's three major rivers, two major rivers, and 18,000 kilometers of coastline, as well as more than 60 countries and regions in Asia, Africa, America, and Europe, providing clients with integrated solutions and services covering large civil engineering and large transportation.
The Water Planning Institute holds the National Class-A comprehensive qualification for engineering design and over 50 other qualifications. It has led or participated in the compilation of over 90 national and industry technical specifications, and has undertaken numerous major national research projects such as the "863" program, "Science and Technology Support" program, and key research and development projects of the Ministry of Transport. It also publishes the national core scientific journal "Water Transport Engineering" and is involved in several industry societies and associations.
Over its 70-year history, the Water Planning Institute has achieved remarkable results. It has designed the first seaport, the first inland river port, the first shipyard, and the first large-scale ship lock in New China, and has delivered over 6,000 transportation construction project planning, design, management, and general contracting outcomes for domestic and international clients. These include large container terminals represented by specialized container port areas, large dry bulk terminals (for ore, coal, and grain) represented by 400,000-ton ore terminals, large liquid bulk terminals (for crude oil, LNG, LPG, and petrochemicals) represented by 450,000-ton crude oil terminals, and waterway hubs such as the Gezhouba and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, along with various general cargo terminals and many other national key projects. It has received over 300 awards in consulting, design, management, and technology, including 1 National Science and Technology Progress Special Award, 2 First Prizes, 3 Second Prizes, and 1 Third Prize, 26 design gold, silver, and bronze awards, 19 Zhan Tianyou and Luban awards, and over 80 provincial and ministerial level science and technology awards.
The Water Planning Institute currently employs more than 1,000 staff and has cultivated a large team of high-quality, technically proficient, and well-structured professionals, represented by academicians and design masters. It has trained 2 academicians, 5 design masters, 1 national "Hundred, Thousand, Ten Thousand Talents" program member, 54 (cumulative) experts enjoying special government allowances, over 100 professor-level senior engineers, over 360 senior engineers, and over 300 registered professionals of various types.
