Preliminary research on Wuhan rail transit began in 1984. In October 2000, Wuhan Rail Transit Co., Ltd. was established, officially commencing the construction of Wuhan's rail transit. In 2007, based on the former Wuhan Rail Transit Co., Ltd., Wuhan Metro Group Co., Ltd. was established, authorized by the government to be responsible for the engineering construction, operation management, land reserve, property development, resource operation, and financing of Wuhan's rail transit, formally kicking off the large-scale construction of Wuhan's rail transit.
Since the construction of Wuhan's first rail transit line began in 2000, up to now, Wuhan's rail transit has achieved a historical transformation from 'non-existence to existence, and from a single line to network coverage.' Currently, rail transit Lines 1, Phase I of Line 2, Airport Line, Southern Extension of Line 2, Line 4, Line 3, Line 6, Line 7, Phase I of Line 8, Yangluo Line, Eastern Section of Line 11 (Guanggu Railway Station - Zuoling), and Zhifang Line have been completed and put into operation, with a total operating mileage of 318 kilometers and a total of 216 stations. According to the approval of the fourth-phase construction plan by the National Development and Reform Commission, by 2024, projects such as Line 12 will also be completed, forming a rail network with 14 lines in operation and a total length of 606 kilometers, fully achieving 'network connectivity in the main urban area and line connections to new towns.'
