State Grid Energy Research Institute

State Grid Energy Research Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as the Institute) is a think tank of State Grid Corporation of China and the only scientific research institution within the State Grid system dedicated to soft science research. It primarily undertakes research responsibilities in theoretical innovation, strategic innovation, and management innovation, providing intellectual support for the strategic decision-making and operational management of State Grid Corporation, as well as consulting services for government policy formulation and the development of the energy and power industry. In accordance with the strategic deployment of State Grid Corporation in the new era, the Institute has established the strategic goal of building a top-tier enterprise think tank.
The Institute was formally established in 2009. After years of accumulation, its research strength ranks among the top in domestic energy and power soft science research institutions. Some research special reports have received instructions from central leadership, and many policy suggestions have been adopted by government departments. The Institute has been selected as one of the first research and consulting bases by the National Energy Administration and has become the supporting institution for the first chairman unit of the Central Enterprise Think Tank Alliance. In 2016 and 2017, it was consecutively included in the "China Think Tank Influence Ranking" list released by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and was included in the "China Core Think Tanks" of 2017 by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. It was also selected into the China Think Tank Index (CTTI) jointly released by Guangming Daily and Nanjing University. The Institute holds the qualifications of a national high-tech enterprise and Grade A engineering consulting unit, and has been selected as one of the first research and consulting bases by the National Energy Administration. It is also a registered consulting unit for the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
Under the strong leadership of the Party Group of State Grid Corporation, all cadres and employees of the Institute are united and enterprising, solidly advancing the construction of a top-tier enterprise think tank. This will provide strong intellectual support for State Grid Corporation to build itself into a world-class energy internet enterprise with outstanding competitiveness and to promote the transformation and upgrading of the energy and power industry.
The Institute's energy research and consulting team has a high level of education and professional titles, strong research capabilities, and distinctive professional characteristics. Master's and doctoral degree holders account for 51% and 40% of the total staff, respectively; senior professional titles account for 56%; researchers account for 75%. A talent echelon has been formed, consisting of chief experts, senior experts in various research fields, experts, and research and consulting personnel at various levels. Combined with introduced overseas high-level talents, external experts, and senior consulting advisors, the Institute has formed a human resources structure that is reasonable in terms of hierarchy and composition. The Institute has established a comprehensive "dual-channel" career development mechanism, ensuring the healthy and sustainable development of the expert team.
The Institute conducts research on issues related to the energy and power industry, as well as development strategies, planning, management innovation, institutional mechanisms, policies, and regulations of power enterprises. Since its establishment, it has undertaken over 2,000 major research projects of State Grid Corporation and nearly 300 major research topics commissioned by government departments. It has won more than 200 research awards at the level of State Grid Corporation or above. The level of awards has been improving year by year, and many research results have received top-level awards with remarkable achievements. Research results and viewpoints on clean energy development, power supply and demand forecasting, comprehensive comparison of coal transportation and power transmission, industrial integration and upgrading, and going global, have been reported to the Central Office and the State Council General Office through State Grid Corporation, receiving high attention and important instructions from relevant central leaders, thus making positive contributions to the scientific development of China's energy and power industry.
